Jan 12 - Feb 3    Harold Balazs: I Did It My Way
The Art Spirit gallery is proud to ring in the new year with local iconic artist Harold Balazs.  Since the 1950s, Balazs’ work has populated churches, colleges, parks, and numerous public spaces around the country.  This year’s show, I Did It My Way, features over 130 pieces representing the seven decades of Harold’s work, including new paintings from 2017. Enamels, paintings, drawings, sculpture, and mixed media assemblages will be on display, ready for purchase.

At 89, Balazs is hanging up his hat, ready to retire.  Looking back on his life as an artist, he has no regrets, confident he did it his way.

Feb 8    Keep the Beat - Free CPR Training
Join us for a day of free CPR, AED, and First Aid training!

Each year, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests instances occur in the United States - a leading cause of death. Per the AED Challenge, “Survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the United States is less than ten percent on average. One reason why cardiac arrest survival rates are so low is that few bystanders do CPR.” A victim’s chances of survival fall dramatically after a few minutes without CPR. A recent American Heart Association statement called for an increase in bystander CPR training among communities. Keep the Beat will enable our organization to encourage broader participation and a regional effort to be prepared and act in emergency situations.

Keep the Beat strives to increase the number of citizens throughout the community properly trained to recognize and provide initial care for a variety of emergencies.

This training will provide attendees with life-saving knowledge to help stabilize situations to allow emergency medical professionals to arrive.

Family-oriented training sessions are taught by local volunteers from Panhandle Health District, the Medical Reserve Corp , and your local fire departments as well as CPR Central (a locally owned CPR training facility)

First 300 people to complete training will receive a swag bag with the opportunity to randomly receive gift cards valued up to $100!

Two session options are available:

Short sessions (hands-only CPR) last 30 minutes and occurs from 4-7 pm at the Silver Lake Mall Common Area in Coeur d’Alene and Cabela's in Post Falls. No registration is required.

Long sessions (American Safety & Health Institute's CPR, AED, and First Aid course) last 4 hours.
Classes start at 8:00 am, 1:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Held at CPR Central (503 W Appleway Ave, Coeur d'Alene). Register at http://www.cprcentral.com/beat.html or (833) 277-2368.

Keep the Beat is funded by the Herbert D. McAvoy Fund in the Idaho Community Foundation.

Thank you to our event organizers for helping to enhance community preparedness:

Feb 10    Kathy Gale and Michael De Forest Informal Artist's Talk and Demo
Please join us for an informal artist's talk with Michael De Forest, followed by a painting demo with Kathy Gale -- both featured artists in our February 2018 show.  Everyone is welcome!

About the Artists
Michael de Forest, Portland, OR

Originally a furniture maker, de Forest has evolved from making balanced, high-end furniture to creating work that is less conventional, even quirky.  His best known piece in the area is a six-feet-tall blue and yellow carved mask that for months welcomed visitors at The Art Spirit Gallery.

The artist’s new collection is titled “Boxes of Instinct and Knowing,” and features trout and salmon carved boxes from poplar and painted with milk paint, a medium commonly used in parts of Africa.  De Forest finds inspiration in these Samonids as they are “significant beings in our life experience and our mythic journey.  They teach us the physical and emotional significance of place and environment, showing us that our independence is necessary to our life and survival.”

De Forest currently teaches at the Oregon College of Art and Craft and at Catlin Gabel School.  The artist received his master of fine arts degree from the Minneapolis College or Art and Design.  The Art Spirit Gallery is honored to exhibit his work.

Kathy Gale, Dalton Gardens, ID

A traditional artist in today’s visual art world, Kathy’s work leans heavily toward impressionism while flirting with abstraction. The artist’s new body of work captures the refreshing beauty of landscapes and imagery she discovered during her summer travels through Montana and Idaho.  Lush pastures, stately grain elevators, and vibrant rivers serve as subjects.

For this body of work, Gale extends gratitude to Steve Gibbs, founder of The Art Spirit Gallery, for encouraging her to alter her technique.  “Steve was an amazing coach, always positive.  Even weeks before he passed, he pulled me aside and encouraged me to use more paint.  This was my goal; I did it for Steve.” The artist’s recent paintings also reflect her experimentation with different surfaces and mediums.

Gale holds a bachelor of arts degree from Gonzaga University.  For many years she resided in the Seattle area, painting for individual and corporate clients. She has participated in various art events in the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene area and, with the help of local artist Teresa McHugh, started the CDA Artists’ Studio Tour.  The Art Spirit Gallery has proudly shown Gale’s work since 2005.

Feb 17    Michael Lee - Artist Demonstration
Please join us for a demonstration by Michael Lee, a local trompe l’oeil clay artist. All are welcome!

Lee’s adventure in clay began as a hobby, following an interest in courses at a local community college.  The artist’s personal style soon started to take shape, and he became fascinated with the trompe l’oeil style, French for fool the eye.’His first hyper-realistic clay sculptures - "Government Issue," a replica of a World War II army canteen in a canvas cover, and "Hard Times," a replica of a battered leather suitcase- won first place awards at local exhibitions and led the way to his personal style.

Always on the lookout for new subject-matter, Michael scours farmer’s markets and antique stores for the perfect models. "I like to sculpt old, beat up leather and canvas objects, such as suitcases, doctor's bags, backpacks, boots, and leather fire helmets - artifacts of human existence.  My sculptures are intended to confuse the senses, creating a gap between perception and reality."
