Nov 1    Mel McCuddin Exhibit
The Art Spirit Gallery is thrilled to showcase over forty new works by well-loved figurative oil painter Mel McCuddin of Millwood, Washington.
Opening Reception:  October 13 from 5-8pm in conjunction with ArtWalk sponsored by the Coeur d’Alene Arts and Culture Alliance.
Artist Demonstration:  October 14 from 11am – 1pm at The Art Spirit Gallery.
Show Sponsor: Fine Brewed.  We thank them for their support of the arts in our community.
Fall Gallery Hours:  Tuesday through Saturday 9 - 6
About the Artist
French poet Charles Baudelaire once observed that the “beautiful is always bizarre.” The legion of Mel McCuddin fans couldn’t have said it any better.
The growing popularity of the 85-year-old artist from tiny Millwood, Washington comes from his instantly recognizable “figurative expressionist” oil paintings that depict offbeat scenes in distinctive muted bruised hues.

In the World of McCuddin…

A tiny cowpoke rides a huge hog like a rodeo bull.  A large blue woman bathers in a birdbath.  Dogs and farm animals gaze from the canvas through human eyes.  McCuddin’s playful and comic expressions showcase the human condition in all of its relatable farce and folly.

“There is a special buzz about Mel,” said Blair Williams, the owner of The Art Spirit Gallery in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where McCuddin’s latest creations will be on exhibit from Oct. 13 through Nov. 4.  Prolific despite his years, over 40 new “McCuddins” (an endearing term many of his fans use) will be on display.  McCuddin found a warm home at The Art Spirit Gallery beginning in 1997, when the gallery first opened its doors and began to regularly show his paintings.  “People from around the country make a pilgrimage here to view and purchase his paintings,” Williams continued. “Mel’s unique loose style and engaging compositions draw people in. They are crazy about his work.”

In contrast, the soft-spoken former dairy deliveryman harbors not a whisper of the weirdness seen on his canvases.  Some “do think of my art as being a bit dark,” McCuddin conceded, “but I’m not that way at all.  It comes from the paint.”  A McCuddin is never premeditated.  Rather, the subject matter emerges slowly through a process of applying coats of paint in a variety of colors with brushes, cloths, and even hands.  McCuddin would use his feet if he thought it would advance the artistic outcome.  “I begin a painting with no idea in mind, and at a certain point in the process of putting paint on the canvas, and idea will suggest itself,” he once explained.  “Many of these ideas change and many are rejected until one seems strong enough to accept.  My paintings, then, are essentially a record of the evolution of an idea.”

About the Artists and this Exhibition

Inspiration can come in many forms – inspiration through religion, inspiration through people, inspiration through music.  Spokane artists Sheila Evans and Elaine Green find inspiration in nature.  And for the November exhibition, each expresses her love and respect for the natural world that envelops us all.

Animal welfare and the environment are two of artist Sheila Evans’ greatest passions.  And in her new body of work, Sheila Evans pays homage to the animals with whom we share the earth.  “My work serves as both a love song and an apology,” states the artist.  “It’s a celebration of the animals’ grace and beauty tinged with sadness over our treatment of them and the environment in which they live.”

Evans received her BFA from Gonzaga University, and has called the Pacific Northwest home for the majority of her life.  Accomplished in many mediums, including pastels and oils, Evans uses vitreous enamel on metal – a relatively new medium added to her repertoire -  to showcase the birds and esteemed animals she respects.  Some images are created on multiple small steel panels and are wired together to form larger, more intricate works.  In Backyard Totem, for example, various animals, birds, and flowers occupy the main panel and join with the others to create a medley of backyard visitors.  Other images are fired onto “re-intentioned” steel butcher trays, honoring the animals represented by changing the tray’s purpose.  “I am drawn to enamel because of its challenge and durability.  Unlike pastels and paintings, enamel pieces are as at home outside in nature as they are inside.”

Like Evans, Elaine Green uses art to communicate a message to the viewer.  “Art is my way of looking at the world and representing it in such a manner to call the viewer’s attention to something that may not be otherwise apparent.” For November, Green will reveal her Beached series, inspired by a recent walk along the Oregon coast in which she sauntered upon a carcass of a beached whale.  Various theories circulate as to why this is happening – the mass beaching of whales - but scientists don’t have a confirmed explanation.  “With this series, I like the mystery, the displacement, and the human reaction of total disregard for what’s happening – perhaps a metaphor for things we do not wish to see.” In this body of work, Green incorporates scanned and printed images of various beach scenes – including St. Joe Beach, and uses charcoal to draw beached whales in space left intentionally void.

Born in St. Maries, Idaho, Elaine Green has spent the majority of her years in the Pacific Northwest and has earned degrees from area institutions – a CFA from Spokane Falls Community College, BFA from Eastern Washington University, and MFA for the University of Idaho.  When discussing her diversity as an artist, Green credits her degree at Spokane Falls Community College for providing the opportunity to concentrate on art in all its forms.  “It forced me to expand my art experience, exposing me to a variety of media in two and three dimensional formats.  I discovered that I like it all, which makes it hard to limit myself.”  To Art Spirit Gallery patrons, Green is most admired for her mystical, beautifully haunting charcoal drawings, many of which will be highlighted in November’s show along with the Beached series.  According to the artist, “What I love most about charcoal is the absolutely visceral connection between my body and the image on paper.  I like to use my hands to push charcoal around.  It begins as such a wild mess and occasionally surprises me . . . that’s the best part!”

Nov 11    Author Night - Robin F. Gainey

Help us welcome Seattle author Robin Gainey when she talks about her second novel, Light of the Northern Dancers, and the pleasures and perils of taking a novel to screen

?

This novel tells the story of two dynamic nineteenth century women, each from a different background. Fiery aristocrat Eden Rose, uprooted from her native Scotland, has tended a foundering marriage and failing ranch at the corner of Crazy Woman Creek and the Powder River for a decade. Her best friend, backwoods spitfire Maddie True, has her own woes a few miles away as a widow with children and an addled father in her care.

?

Sounds like a great novel - and TV series!

Don’t miss this opportunity to dress up like the characters in the movie, and interact to the film with everyone else in the audience.

Having started in the UK back in 1999, the Sound of Music Sing-a-Long show has now become a worldwide hit, playing to packed houses across the globe with over 10,000 performances in 11 different countries! It’s even filled the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles – 7 times!
Let’s start at the very beginning (a very good place to start)…
For those of you not yet converted, Sound of Music Sing-a-Long is a screening of the classic Julie Andrews film musical in glorious, full-screen technicolor, complete with subtitles so that the whole audience can sing along!
The fun-filled show starts with a vocal warm-up led by the evening’s host, who also takes the audience through their complimentary ‘magic moments fun pack’, containing various props to be used at strategic points throughout the film.
Get ready to yodel in North Idaho! This is your chance to belt out all of your favorites lyrics to Climb Every Mountain, Do-Re-Mi, Sixteen Going On Seventeen, Maria, Edelweiss and all of the beloved songs that you typically only sing in the shower. Feel free to dress up as your favorite character or come as you are. Costume ideas include nuns, girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes, A portion of the proceeds will go to support the Kroc Center scholarship fund.

“What a fun way to see a great classic film on the big screen, as well as being able to sing, cheer, and laugh out loud in the theater!” – Kris S
