May 13 - Jun 4    Allen and Mary Dee Dodge Exhibition
Celebrate community; celebrate the arts!  Join The Art Spirit Gallery on Friday, May 13 for ArtWalk and the Opening Reception for Coeur d’Alene residents Allen and Mary Dee Dodge. Meet the artists and view their new works of metal sculpture and vibrant enamels. Outside the gallery, watch spectacular performances by the young artists of Sorensen Magnet School of the Arts and Humanities.  Enjoy a lively evening in downtown Coeur d’Alene. Everyone is welcome! The show will run from May 13 through June 4.

This show is sponsored by Coeur d’Alene Summer Theatre. We thank them for their fine theatrical productions and their continued support of art and community in our region.

Spring Hours Tues. - Sat. from 11-6. (Please note that our hours will change to 7 days a week again in June.)

ABOUT THE ARTISTS AND THIS EXHIBIT:

For over four decades, Coeur d’Alene artists Allen and Mary Dee Dodge have taken an active role in the region’s thriving art culture. The couple’s artistic contributions, inspired in part by collaborations with Spokane’s icon Harold Balazs, populate private residences and local public areas.  Large-scale metal sculpture, colorful enamels, elaborately painted rooms, and creatively designed bike racks are seen throughout the community, including the North Idaho College campus, the Coeur d’Alene Wastewater Treatment Facility, the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, the Hayden Lake Library, Midtown Coeur d’Alene, and the Spokane Service Center. The couple specifically designs and crafts each piece to fit the venue.  At the Coeur d’Alene Wastewater Treatment Facility, for example, 10 feet tall metal sculptures depict organisms commonly found in wastewater.

In the upcoming May show at The Art Spirit Gallery, over forty new pieces will be showcased.  Mary Dee’s thought-provoking enamel collages, Allen’s playful outdoor welded steel sculptures, and the couple’s intriguing collaborative work will fill the gallery.

Allen and Mary Dee met while attending the Kansas City Art Institute.  Mary Dee graduated with a background in ceramics and Allen with a background in painting and sculpture.  The couple finds joy and inspiration working collaboratively.  The Art Spirit Gallery has proudly shown their work since 2010.

Jun 10    Victoria Brace & Robert Grimes opening reception... with Harold Balazs
Join The Art Spirit Gallery on Friday, June 10 for ArtWalk and the Opening Reception for Spokane artists Victoria Brace & Robert Grimes. Meet the artists and view their latest works. Also as part of this show, over forty works by Harold Balazs will be showcased in the mezzanine of the gallery.  Enjoy a lively evening of fine art, fine dining and good friends in Downtown Coeur d’Alene. Everyone is welcome!

The show runs from June 10 through July 2 and is sponsored by The Bluebird – A Midtown Eatery.  We thank owners Viljo and Autumn Basso for their fine restaurants and continued support of the arts.

Victoria and Robert will give an informal demonstration and discussion of their work starting at 1:00 on Saturday, June 11.

Summer Hours begin on June 10: Open every day from 11-6.

Victoria Brace

Raised and educated in Russia, Victoria Brace relocated to Spokane in the 1990s and has been sharing her craft with audiences in this region since. She is well-known for her hauntingly beautiful local landscapes and cityscapes, figurative and still life works.  Brace’s figurative pieces are drawn from an internal point of reference, rather than directly from a model. She studies the faces of people she meets and then recaptures their essence from memory. Her formal education at the Moscow College of Art gives her a strong foundation from which to begin her improvisational process.

”I start a painting with a visual story in mind - it's mostly the mood, the movement, the play of colors and shapes that I want to capture on canvas, usually no narrative at this point. It's rarely a straightforward process, most of my paintings are layers of images, where things get added or painted out, some many times over, until I hit just the right ‘note’ - it can be a certain color combination, a silhouette, even just a brush stroke, but when it happens, it feels true and it acts as a tuning fork for the rest of the painting. In short, I make things up, and then I paint them so they'd feel real. Memories, observations, thoughts and experiences combine in my mind, and the images form.”

Brace’s cityscapes of Spokane are treated like portraits. She believes cities have personalities, distinctive moods, structure, and rhythm. “After a long period of time, a place develops its own character; there are enough layers of history, events, different aesthetics accumulated, so a city becomes similar to a living organism,” she says.

This year’s exhibit includes some pieces with the theme of “bizarre carnival and masquerade characters,” as the artist puts it, which grows naturally from her painting process. This theme has occurred many times over the years, but for this show, she embraced it; it allowed her the freedom to tell a visual story without the confinements of realism. Her most recent body of work will include upwards of 20 new pieces with a variety of subject matter.

The Art Spirit Gallery has proudly shown Brace’s work since 2008.

Robert Grimes

Robert Grimes’ fifty years of exploration in the studio has produced a lifetime’s body of work that is at once finely crafted and conceptually driven. His journey began in 1981 after picking up a sketchbook in order to “re-learn how to draw,” and he has since developed a unique and disciplined practice. Beginning each time with what he calls “automatic drawings,” Grimes begins to explore the sub-conscious, tapping into inspiration from Freud and Jung. He avoids literal depictions as long as he can, but eventually, “things come out.” He feels that a piece has been successful when the viewer is unable to articulate the aesthetic experience in words.

Born and raised in Colorado, Grimes graduated from the University of Denver with a BFA in painting and from Indiana University with an MFA in sculpture. Since retiring from a career in jewelry design 1998, he has been able to devote his full attention to an already thriving practice. He has had 11 solo exhibitions and has participated in 25 group shows at The Art Spirit Gallery in the last nineteen years.

Grimes is adept in the use of a wide variety of media that allows him to experiment, almost scientifically, in a search for the materials and processes that will best communicate to the viewer. “My goal is simple – make an original expressive experience without describing one. I like to give clues to unexplainable mysteries within my work and make imagery believable enough to draw one into what is not believable.”

Like his work, Grimes’ artistic style is free from boundaries. Formal education, cultural influences, and the long-standing practice of Automatic Drawing are consistent elements of Grimes’ work as an artist. His choice of medium and the shape of his characteristically sculpted canvases are proof of his endless innovation. His goal has been to discover a sculpting medium and method that can be worked as intuitively as his drawings.

The Art Spirit Gallery celebrates its extensive partnership with this talented artist.

Come hear Noah Kroese share his graphic novel "Saturday", he'll talk about the process of creating and designing his first graphic novel.

Jun 23    Business After Hours

SpringHill Suites is passionate about art. We not only aim to inspire our guests with modern design and style, but
also understand the importance of art education as a tool for character development and academic improvement in young students. For this reason, we are focusing on supporting art education in underserved public schools - a mission we are excited to share with Fresh Artists, our Community Service partner!

Fresh Artists empowers young lives through art by providing an innovative concept of child-centric philanthropy. In a time of drastic budget cuts hitting art education in public schools, the nonprofit organization is dedicated to saving art making for all children. Fresh Artists supplies innovative art programs and art supplies to teachers in severely under-resourced public schools, and engages the children being served as full philanthropic partners in the􀀈giving process.
Business After Hours is held on the fourth Thursday of every month. This networking event provides an opportunity for members to show off their offices or facilities. Food and beverages are provided by the sponsor business. There are drawings for door prizes. This is a great way to meet other Chamber members in a more casual “after work” atmosphere.

Jun 26    Ironman CDA 70.3

IRONMAN 70.3 racing comes to one of the most loved and beautiful IRONMAN towns.
Taking place in the pristine heart of one of Idaho's prettiest areas, this race takes place in the early summer, when the lush surrounding forest is starting to become very green. Coeur d’Alene is a classic resort and vacation destination that offers numerous recreational activities. The glacier-fed lake, surrounding forests and parks, the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes and the Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course’s floating green are just a few examples.
This race follows the same course as IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene, with athletes simply completing one loop of each discipline instead of two. This makes IRONMAN 70.3 Coeur d’Alene accessible to a broader audience and allows athletes to prepare on the same course if they are racing IRONMAN Coeur d’Alene.

Athletes begin their day with 1.2-mile swim in the clear waters of Lake Coeur d’Alene. The challenging 56-mile bike course boasts with turns. The run loops along the shores of the lake blending the energy of a small town resort atmosphere with a world-class course, loved for years as a full-distance favorite.

The 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 Coeur d'Alene offers 30 qualifying slots for the 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.
