About the Artist:
Richard Swanson, sculptor – Helena, MT
Richard Swanson is accomplished in multiple mediums. For this exhibition, Swanson's work includes iron-red clay whimsical teapots and colorful painted steel sculptures. The teapots - inspired by historical examples, including Inuit carvings, Pre-Columbian ceramics, and African sculpture - possess a unique way of combining sculpture and function. The steel sculptures incorporate color, line, and rhythm. Swanson states, "I think of them as jazz phrases - no hidden meanings, just something spontaneous, lyrical, and sometimes loopy."
